What's Tricky This Coming Week ???

With produce travelling from all corners of the globe there is always something you should stay away from.

This page is designed to ensure you don’t get caught out by listing something on your menu when supply is proving slightly tricky.

Fresh produce revolves around the climate so changes happen frequently, make sure you come back every week to find out what will be difficult during the coming week.

    Tomatoes

The Dutch season for tomatoes is in high demand now and as volumes from the vines are extremely low the demands are simply outstripping supply.

The Salad Bowl (Spain) crop is at least 2 weeks away so prices are escalating.

    Please Be Careful.

    UK Strawberry

If you don’t want to damage your GP then you need to take note as strawberry is extremely expensive at the moment.

As reported UK supply came to a close last week and the only place to look is the Dutch crop.

With massive demand, prices have escalated to way over £6.00 a punnet please be careful.

    Aubergines

The same story as with the tomatoes the Dutch season is coming to an end and without any supply from Spain available volume is becoming increasingly difficult to secure.

Prices are on the rise and will remain high for a few weeks until Spain come to the rescue.

    Figs

This year we have seen a bumper crop of Turkish figs, volumes have been great and coupled with fantastic quality everyone has been happy with these ruby meat beauties.

The Brazilian season is a little time away so things will be getting pretty tight, expect prices to be on the rise.

    Blueberry

Blueberry is moving away from our European shores into air-freighted fruit from the southern hemisphere.

The quality will be amazing but anything that travels by air is hugely expensive - Please watch out

    Grelots

Grelots will start to fade away, the red variety will be the first to go followed by the white.

We will then have a short gap until the Italian production starts but these are miles apart from the French bulbous variety we have enjoyed all summer.

    WATCH OUT...

Potato Trouble

This time of year is critical for the most overused and often forgotten about crop we grow in the UK.

Potatoes are used on most things and over the years there is no doubt it has turned into a commodity crop that we all just expect to be available in good supply and quality at all times.

We have all been aware of the severe heat we have faced and the impending issue with crops that are still in the ground due to lack of water.

We will be doing an indepth piece on the potato forcast over the coming week but of late we have been receiving warnings from potato growers and processors across the land warning of a troublsome season ahead.

Early lifts of the crop are showing signs of lack of large graded potatoes which are used for bakers, chips etc along with reduced yields. Just take a look at the words flowing from Koffman’s!!!!

There isn't a shortage just now but please be warned as this coming 18/19 season could be extremely troublesome for our trusty tuber as the rest of the crop is lifted and inspected.

We will keep you updated.....
