The time has come to find all the facts you may ever need around the existence of the most radical of fruit... the Pineapple!

Did you know Pineapples originated in South America, between Paraguay & Brazil but Vietnam is the largest producer of Pineapples at 0.66 million tonnes.

The first ever record of the word ‘Pineapple’ dates back to 1398. However, back then, the word was actually a description of ‘pine cones’. Between 1664 and 1694, the word ‘pineapple’ referred to both the fruit and the pine cones.

Pineapples were such a status symbol in 18th century England that you could rent one for the evening to take to a party!

A pineapple fruit can take up to 3 years for growing and becoming mature on a plant but the harvesting is done earlier than this. The reason a pineapple is harvested slightly before it fully ripens is that once that happens, it becomes difficult to store it.

A pineapple that is fully ripen will stay for a maximum of 2 days under normal conditions and maximum for a week under refrigerated conditions. This means that the fruit is very perishable once fully ripe.

It is easy to grow pineapples: cut the top off and partially dry out the crown then put it back into soil and it will grow!

Only one pineapple is produced by a single plant in a single season! Wow!

Pineapple is pollinated by some birds and even bats.

More than 200 flowers are produced by a single pineapple plant. These flowers have their individual fruits which look like scales. These individual fruits join together to form a single pineapple. These flowers usually have different colours ranging from purple to red and even lavender. There are some cultivar which get way more than 200 flowers.

Did you know that almost every part of pineapple can be used for alcohol and vinegar production? And the non-edible parts can be used as pet food!

At Halloween if you can’t get a pumpkin use a pineapple!

Pineapple is great for tenderising meat as Bromelain breaks down proteins so if you hold it in your mouth it’ll start eating you!!

Pineapples are made up of 86% water and 13% carbohydrates. There is almost no fat or protein in them.

Pineapples are international symbols of welcome and are a symbolic way of saying “you are perfect” when presented to someone. Gate posts and door frames often have pineapples to signal a welcome. How sweet!
